Press Release from Humboldt County Joint Information Center:
A 17th Humboldt County residents have died after testing positive for COVID-19, and a further 27 cases of the virus were reported today. The total number of county municipalities that have tested positive for the virus now stands at 1,539.
The person who died was in the 80s and died outside the county. Dr. Humboldt County Health Officer Ian Hoffman said public health is extending its sympathy to the families who have lost loved ones to the virus.
In vaccine news, the county received its first shipment of the Moderna vaccine earlier this week. The Moderna vaccine is particularly important for rural areas because it does not need to be frozen at extreme temperatures and, once thawed, can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 30 days. The Moderna vaccine can also be sent in smaller quantities. Distribution of this vaccine to local providers started today and will continue in weekly allocations.
The county is currently in Phase 1A with vaccine distribution, which includes three levels indicating priority. Humboldt County is currently vaccinating Phase 1A Level 1 and is preparing to expand to Level 2, which will include home health workers, home care and home support services, public health staff and primary care clinics.

Most Humboldt counties are closed on December 24 and 25, although the Joint Information Center opens on Saturday, December 26 from 7 p.m. 10 to kl. 16 to take calls from the public on topics related to the virus.
