Champion Editions new mechanic and receives clip of anime car

Does D stand for Initial Dan?

Many Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition players were hopeful that they would receive the Dan Hibiki and Season 5 update in time for Christmas, but we now know that it will only happen after Valentine’s Day next year.

That does not mean, however, that there are no potential clues to try to unpack this holiday season.

Capcom’s Senior Community and eSports Manager Matt ‘TheStreetWriter’ Edwards recently made a trip down to the company’s offices for work reasons before sending word that he might have to stick around “to test some movement and mechanics.”

This, of course, led to a lot of comments and questions regarding SF5’s upcoming new combat mechanic and what he meant by “movements”, but there was one that especially stood out.

A fan asked Edwards for any vague hints that the community could chew on this holiday season, to which the longtime Capcom rep responded by using a GIF for a car game.

The clip itself appears to be from the original D-anime, as one of the characters appears to be starting to slip, and it’s probably as vague as they come.

There is of course a bit to continue based on the clip itself, but it gives the imagination to try to tie it in some way to a fighting game.

Guilty Gear Strive’s new Roman Cancel, which allows characters to move during stops, was originally called Drift Roman Cancel by some fans, but that would be pretty weird for a game like SF5.

The car also seems to be accelerating, so maybe there is something in terms of speed or movement in the maps, though it is doubtful that Capcom would go the Street Fighter 5 Turbo route.

Maybe the classic car bonus phase will return if we take that tweet quite literally.

Since Edwards is also known a bit for having fun with the community, there is also the strong possibility that this can only be a magic wand to keep fans talking and guessing until more concrete revelations start to come – or maybe use GIF as a fun way to escape the conversation.

Everything is likely to be revealed during the Capcom Cup weekend, which is scheduled to take place on February 19-21, 2021, when they finally release Dan and all that Season 5 holds.
