Authorities respond to report on ‘active shooting’ at Sevierville Walmart

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (WVLT) – Sevierville police said two people have been detained after a reported shooter at Walmart on the Parkway. The call came Wednesday afternoon as an “active shooting game,” police said.

Dozens of people were knocked out of Walmart just after 6 p.m. 15.30 Wednesday, according to a manager of the nearby Chick-Fil-A store.

Cody Cummings told WVLT News Anchor Amanda Hara between 20 and 30 Walmart customers were safe in the Chick-Fil-A store he manages. The restaurant is next to Walmart. Cummings said a civilian safe inside his store reported a fight between two men, resulting in one of the men pulling out a gun. People nearby were disturbed, causing panic to arise.

Cummings said one of his employees was inside Walmart when customers were warned over the loudspeaker that a man with a gun was moving through the store.

Cummings reported that a SWAT team was being set up in the area, apparently searching for the possible armed man.

The WVLT tried to reach the Walmart store, but no one answered the phone lines. A WVLT News crew was on their way to the scene.

Tanger Outlets in Sevierville was also put on lockdown Wednesday afternoon, but officials said they thought there was a threat on the mall’s campus.

Authorities were unable to immediately release information on whether anyone was injured.
